Why the numbers change from birth to adulthood

A newborn is born with more bones than an adult (roughly 270-300 versus 206) because many bones that start out as separate pieces of cartilage or bone gradually fuse together during childhood and adolescence — the skull, spine, and pelvis all include bones that fuse this way.
