What is a number?

A number is an abstract concept of quantity, order, or measurement. It exists independently of any particular symbol used to write it down — the underlying idea behind every number profile on this site.

Number vs. numeral

A number is the abstract concept; a numeralis a written symbol that represents it. The number three is the same abstract quantity whether it's written "3" (Hindu-Arabic numeral), "III" (Roman numeral), or spelled "three" (an English number word) — three different numerals, one number.

Numbers do several distinct jobs: counting (how many objects), measuring (how much of a continuous quantity, like length or temperature), ordering (which position — first, second, third), and labelling(an identifier that happens to use digits, like a phone number or a jersey number, where the usual arithmetic doesn't apply at all).

When digits aren't really a number

The clearest test: does ordinary arithmetic mean anything for these digits? A genuine mathematical number passes; a year, a code, an identifier, a label, a version, or an ordinal position generally doesn't — even though all of them are written with digits.

Mathematical number 24

As a mathematical number, 24 is even, composite, and has 8 factors (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24) — genuine facts about the quantity 24.

A genuine quantity that ordinary arithmetic applies to — it can be prime, even, a perfect square, added to another number meaningfully, and so on.

Measurement 24 (hours in a day)

As a measurement, 24 is fixed by the 24-hour clock convention — asking whether 24 hours 'has a lot of factors' is true but tells you nothing about why a day is divided that way.

A quantity expressed against a defined unit or standard (24 hours in a day, 60 seconds in a minute) — arithmetic is meaningful, but the specific value is a fixed convention of the measuring system, not a discovered mathematical property.

Code 404 (HTTP status)

As a code, HTTP status 404 is an assigned identifier from an IETF standard — 404 + 1 = 405 is true arithmetic, but 405 isn't a 'better' or 'related' status; it's simply a different, unrelated code ('Method Not Allowed').

An assigned identifier from a fixed registry or standard — its digits don't represent an amount, and arithmetic on it is meaningless (HTTP status 404 + 1 is not a 'better' status; it's a different, unrelated code).

Year 1066 or 2026

As a year, 1066 marks the Norman Conquest and 2026 is simply next on the calendar — neither year is mathematically 'special' because of it; the historical or civil significance has nothing to do with the number's mathematical properties.

A position in a calendar era, not a quantity — asking whether a year is 'prime' or 'a perfect square' is mathematically valid but tells you nothing about the year itself; two consecutive years aren't 'close' the way two consecutive quantities are.

Identifier A serial number or account number

As an identifier, a serial number's job is to be unique and unambiguous — its digits don't represent an amount, so there's no meaningful sense in which one serial number is 'more' than another.

A unique tag for one specific thing (a serial number, an account number, a reference number) — chosen or assigned rather than measured, with no quantity for arithmetic to act on.

Label A jersey number or house number

As a label, a jersey number identifies a player — it isn't a count of anything, and comparing two players' jersey numbers arithmetically (e.g. 'number 9 is three times number 3') is meaningless.

A name that happens to be written in digits (a jersey number, a model name, a house number) — its main job is to be recognisable and distinct from its neighbours, not to represent an amount.

Version Version 2.0

As a version, '2.0' marks a release later than '1.0' — but the gap between them isn't a quantity; there's no meaningful sense in which version 2.0 is 'twice' version 1.0.

A marker of sequence in a series of releases — later is generally 'newer', but the gap between version 2 and version 3 isn't a meaningful quantity the way the gap between the numbers 2 and 3 is.

Ordinal position 3rd place

As an ordinal, '3rd' says only that something came after 1st and 2nd — it doesn't imply the underlying quantity 3, and '3rd' minus '1st' isn't '2nd'.

A position in an ordered sequence (1st, 2nd, 3rd) — comparable (earlier/later) but not something you'd usually add or multiply the way you would a quantity.

The major families of numbers

Each family below strictly contains the ones listed before it — every natural number is a whole number, every whole number is an integer, and so on, up to the real numbers.

Natural numbers

The counting numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, ... By one common convention these start at 1; by another (common in set theory and computer science), they start at 0. Both conventions are in genuine, current use — this is a definitional choice, not a factual dispute.

Whole numbers

The natural numbers together with 0: 0, 1, 2, 3, ...

Integers

Whole numbers and their negatives: ..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...

Rational numbers

Any number that can be written as a fraction of two integers (a/b, with b not 0) — including 1/2, -4, and 7 (7/1). Written as decimals, they always either terminate or repeat.

Irrational numbers

Numbers that cannot be written as a simple fraction — their decimal expansion never terminates or repeats. π and √2 are classic examples.

Real numbers

Every rational and irrational number together — every point on the number line.

Complex numbers

Real numbers extended with an "imaginary" component (multiples of i, where i² = -1), used to solve equations that have no real-number solution, such as x² = -1.

Other everyday classifications

Alongside the number-system families above, integers are also classified as positive or negative (with zero being neither), even or odd (divisible by 2 or not), and prime or composite (exactly two divisors, or more than two — 1 is conventionally neither). Zero and infinity

Zero is a genuine number — see the full profile for 0 for its history and everyday role. Infinity is different in kind: it describes an unbounded quantity or process, not a specific value on the real number line, and doesn't obey ordinary arithmetic (∞ + 1 = ∞, which no real number satisfies) — so it's a mathematical concept adjacent to numbers, rather than an ordinary number itself.

How number systems developed

Written numeral systems developed independently in several civilisations — Egyptian, Babylonian, Chinese, Mayan, and others each created their own way of representing quantity, long before any single unified system existed. Common misconceptions

  • "Zero isn't a real number"— zero is a genuine number under every major definition; the only real debate is whether it counts as "natural" by a given convention.
  • "Infinity is just a very large number"— infinity isn't a specific quantity at all, and doesn't follow ordinary arithmetic rules.
