Why is a kilobyte 1024 bytes and not 1000?

It was, and formally it no longer is. Memory is addressed in powers of two, and 2¹⁰ = 1,024 is the closest one to a thousand, so early computing borrowed 'kilo' for it. That clashed with SI, where kilo means exactly 1,000, so in 1998 the IEC named 1,024 bytes a kibibyte (KiB) and left kilobyte meaning 1,000. Both usages are still in circulation, which is exactly why a drive sold as 1 TB shows as about 931 GB.
