Standards and specification numbers

ISO 9001, IEC 60529, IEEE 754 and ISO 8601 are catalogue numbers issued by standards bodies. A standard is voluntary until a contract or a jurisdiction adopts it, which is why the same number can be a formality in one country and a legal requirement in another — and why almost every record here is scoped to who issued it rather than to who must follow it.

The most useful thing to understand about a standard number is that it says nothing about force. ISO 9001 obliges nobody until a customer demands it; ISO 26262 obliges nobody until a regulator adopts it; IEC 60364 underlies national wiring rules that are law in the countries that enacted them. The bodies also overlap: floating-point arithmetic is IEEE 754 and IEC 60559, the same document under two numbers so that specifications can cite it without pointing at an American professional body. What the numbers reliably give you is a stable, translation-free way to name a document that may be revised many times, which is exactly what a contract needs.

Management systems, and what certification proves

A large family — quality, environmental, security, energy, food safety, anti-bribery — shares one structure, which is why an organisation certified to one finds the next much easier. Certification proves that a system exists and is audited, not that outcomes are good: ISO 37001 evidences anti-bribery controls rather than the absence of bribery, and ISO 9001 certifies consistency rather than quality. The distinction is routinely lost in marketing and is worth holding onto.

Numbers that quietly shape everyday objects

ISO 216 keeps a constant aspect ratio so halving an A3 sheet gives A4. ISO 668 standardised the shipping container rather than the ship, which is what made global container freight possible. IEC 60320 specifies the kettle-shaped connector on the back of nearly every computer. IEC 60529 gives the IP rating on a phone — two independent digits, solids then liquids, routinely read as a single toughness score it was never meant to be.
