The first 911 call was placed in Haleyville, Alabama on 16 February 1968, weeks after AT&T announced the number. Adoption was gradual rather than immediate: coverage spread county by county over the following two decades, and nationwide availability was not reached until the 1980s.

The Porsche 911 has been produced continuously since 1964 with a rear-mounted flat-six engine, a layout generally considered difficult to balance and retained through successive generations rather than corrected.

RFC 911 documents the Exterior Gateway Protocol implementation under Berkeley UNIX 4.2, published in 1984. It has no connection to the emergency number beyond the coincidence of the value, which is the ordinary situation for a registry identifier.

911 is the number the public dials in the United States and Canada to reach police, fire and emergency medical services — one of the most consequential three-digit numbers in everyday North American life.
