666

The oldest surviving fragment of Revelation, Papyrus 115, gives the number as 616 rather than 666. Both readings are attested in antiquity, and the variant is generally explained by different transliterations of the same name into Hebrew letters.

Many biblical scholars read 666 as a gematria — a sum of Hebrew letter values — encoding 'Neron Caesar', which would make the passage a veiled reference to the emperor Nero rather than a prophecy about a future figure. The variant reading 616 found in some manuscripts fits the alternative spelling 'Nero Caesar', which is often cited as support. This is a scholarly interpretation of the text, widely held but not universally accepted.

Avoidance of 666 shows up in concrete public decisions, not only in folklore: in 2003 the United States highway numbered 666 — a branch of Route 66 nicknamed the 'Devil's Highway' — was formally renumbered 491 after requests from residents and state officials who objected to the association.

The numbers on a European roulette wheel run 0 to 36 and add up to 666, which is the same triangular-number fact as 666 being the sum of 1 to 36 — the zero contributes nothing. The coincidence gave rise to the wheel's nickname as 'the devil's game', a piece of casino folklore rather than anything about its origin: the modern layout is generally credited to eighteenth-century France and no contemporary source connects the total to the name.

In the Book of Revelation, the number of the beast is given as six hundred and sixty-six. Some early manuscripts, including Papyrus 115, read 616. The most widely held scholarly reading is gematria for Nero Caesar written in Hebrew letters, which also explains the variant: the Latin spelling gives 616. This is a scholarly account rather than the tradition's own framing.

666 is referred to as the 'number of the beast' in the Book of Revelation (13:18) of the Christian New Testament; some early manuscripts instead give 616. Its later association with the occult and popular superstition is a separate, later cultural development distinct from the original text.

Iron Maiden's 1982 album took the number as its title, and it has since been used across heavy metal, horror film and branding as immediate shorthand. The commercial use is a deliberate inversion of the religious association.

2² + 3² + 5² + 7² + 11² + 13² + 17² = 4 + 9 + 25 + 49 + 121 + 169 + 289 = 666. The identity is real and checkable, and it is a coincidence in the strict sense: no theorem connects the primes to this total, and taking six or eight primes gives nothing of interest. It is recorded here because it is genuinely surprising arithmetic, not because it means anything.

666 is the 36th triangular number: it is the sum of every whole number from 1 to 36 (36 × 37 ÷ 2 = 666). It is also a repdigit in base 10. Both are ordinary arithmetical properties, entirely independent of the number's religious associations.
