How 508 is understood across different contexts — never implying one meaning because of another.

  508 is the answer to a directory that contains itself. WebDAV operations can traverse collections, and a symbolic link pointing back up the tree turns a copy into an infinite one. Detecting the loop and reporting it beats recursing until something runs out.

• Technology & computing

  Taipei 101 reaches 508 metres and contains a 660-tonne tuned mass damper suspended near the top, one of the few such devices left visible to visitors.

• Geography

  +508 reaches Saint Pierre and Miquelon, French islands a few kilometres from Canada. They are the only part of New France still under French sovereignty.

  An assigned identifier from a fixed registry or standard — its digits don't represent an amount, and arithmetic on it is meaningless (HTTP status 404 + 1 is not a 'better' status; it's a different, unrelated code).
