Why 410 is special

Same number, different meanings

How 410 is understood across different contexts — never implying one meaning because of another.

• Mathematics

  410 is 404 with certainty. A 404 leaves open the possibility that the address was mistyped or the page will return; 410 states that removal was intentional and permanent, which lets search engines drop the URL immediately rather than re-checking it for months. Very few sites bother, which is why 404 does most of the work.

• Everyday life

  E410 locust bean gum is milled from carob seed endosperm. It is used with other hydrocolloids because the combination gels where neither does alone.

• History

  Rome's capture in 410 was militarily limited and psychologically enormous — the city had been inviolate since 387 BC. Augustine's City of God is a direct response to the argument that Christianity was to blame.

• Technology & computing

  410 asserts intent where 404 leaves ambiguity. Search engines treat it as a signal to drop the URL immediately rather than re-checking for months, which makes it the correct code for content withdrawn on purpose. Almost nobody uses it, so 404 absorbs both meanings in practice.

Not just a mathematical number

410is also used in ways where ordinary arithmetic doesn't apply — each listed below with what genuinely does and doesn't follow from it.

• Mathematical number

  A genuine quantity — its mathematical properties (prime, square, factors, and so on) are real facts about it.

  A genuine quantity that ordinary arithmetic applies to — it can be prime, even, a perfect square, added to another number meaningfully, and so on.

• Code

  Also used as a code — HTTP status codes.

  An assigned identifier from a fixed registry or standard — its digits don't represent an amount, and arithmetic on it is meaningless (HTTP status 404 + 1 is not a 'better' status; it's a different, unrelated code).
