Why 308 is special

Same number, different meanings

How 308 is understood across different contexts — never implying one meaning because of another.

• Mathematics

  308 is to 301 what 307 is to 302: the version that keeps the request method intact. The pair were added late, once it was clear the older codes could not be corrected without breaking the web, so the specification now carries both the behaviour it wanted and the behaviour it got.

• Technology & computing

  308 stands to 301 exactly as 307 stands to 302: same permanence, but the request method survives the redirect. It matters most for APIs, where a redirected POST silently becoming a GET turns a write into a read and loses the body.

• Media & popular culture

  The 308 GTS's role in Magnum, P.I. shaped its public recognition more than its engineering did. Television has repeatedly done more for a car's reputation than motorsport.

Not just a mathematical number

• Mathematical number

  A genuine quantity — its mathematical properties (prime, square, factors, and so on) are real facts about it.

  A genuine quantity that ordinary arithmetic applies to — it can be prime, even, a perfect square, added to another number meaningfully, and so on.

• Code

  Also used as a code — HTTP status codes.

  An assigned identifier from a fixed registry or standard — its digits don't represent an amount, and arithmetic on it is meaningless (HTTP status 404 + 1 is not a 'better' status; it's a different, unrelated code).
