Where 2600 fits
Why 2600 is special
AT&T used a 2,600 Hz signal internally to mark a line as idle, so a caller who produced that tone could take control of the trunk. A toy whistle from a cereal packet happened to emit it, which is how the discovery spread.

In historical numeral systems
Egyptian
2 lotuses, 6 coils of rope
2 × 1,000 + 6 × 100 = 2,600. The signs are simply repeated and added; where they sit on the line is a matter of layout, not value.
Babylonian
4 corner wedges + 3 vertical wedges (sixties place), 2 corner wedges (units place)
43 × 60 + 20 = 2600. Places are separated by a space on the tablet, with the higher place written first.
Systems that simply cannot reach this value are left out. Where a script needs a font most readers do not have, the reading is given instead of the glyphs — see number systems for each system in full.

The network carried its control signals on the same channel as the voice, so anyone who could reproduce a 2,600 Hz tone could instruct it. The fix was to move signalling onto a separate channel, which is why the same trick cannot work today.
