Why 202 is special

Same number, different meanings

How 202 is understood across different contexts — never implying one meaning because of another.

• Mathematics

  202 is the honest answer for work that takes longer than a request. The server has queued the job and is not promising it succeeded; the client is expected to poll or wait for a callback. It is the status code for a world where not everything finishes in a few hundred milliseconds.

• Everyday life

  E202 potassium sorbate inhibits mould and yeast at low concentrations across a wide pH range, which is why it is among the most widely used preservatives.

• Technology & computing

  202 makes asynchrony explicit. The server has taken the request and made no promise about the outcome, which is the correct answer for anything queued — a video transcode, a bulk import, an email send. Clients that treat 202 as success and stop checking are the source of a whole class of silent failures.

• Geography

  The 1947 area code assignment gave low-effort rotary-dial combinations to the highest-traffic areas. 202 for Washington encodes an assumption about telephone demand made nearly eighty years ago.

Not just a mathematical number

202is also used in ways where ordinary arithmetic doesn't apply — each listed below with what genuinely does and doesn't follow from it.

• Mathematical number

  A genuine quantity — its mathematical properties (prime, square, factors, and so on) are real facts about it.

  A genuine quantity that ordinary arithmetic applies to — it can be prime, even, a perfect square, added to another number meaningfully, and so on.

• Code

  Also used as a code — HTTP status codes.

  An assigned identifier from a fixed registry or standard — its digits don't represent an amount, and arithmetic on it is meaningless (HTTP status 404 + 1 is not a 'better' status; it's a different, unrelated code).
